About Sauna & Plunge Lab
Sauna & Plunge Lab is an independent, U.S.-based publication that reviews home infrared saunas, cold plunge tubs, and sauna blankets. We exist because spec sheets mislead, owner forums are scattered, and most "best of" lists are thinly disguised re-rankings of whatever brands pay the most. We wanted a resource that talked about home recovery equipment the way a friend with a cabin in their basement and a chiller in their garage would: practical, opinionated, and honest about trade-offs.
Our picks combine long-term owner feedback, manufacturer specs, and hands-on testing where noted. Each review on the site is labeled either "Hands-on tested" or "Researched from owner feedback and specs" so you always know what we actually had our hands on. Where we have first-party or authorized reviews, you'll see them attributed on the page; where we don't, we say so.
What we cover
Our core beats are infrared sauna cabins (indoor and outdoor), sauna blankets, and cold plunge tubs in every format, chiller-based units, insulated barrels, upright recovery plunges, and DIY chest-freezer setups. We cover the brands buyers actually shortlist: Sun Home, Sunlighten, HigherDOSE, SaunaSpace, Nordica, Plunge, Ice Barrel, Renu Therapy, and Nordic Wave, plus the cheaper alternatives people end up cross-shopping. We also write long-form buying guides, maintenance walkthroughs (UV vs. ozone, water care, filter swaps), and decision frameworks like "infrared vs. traditional" or "chiller vs. ice."
How we evaluate
Every "best of" pick starts with a shortlist drawn from category leaders, then narrows based on three inputs we weight in this order: long-term owner feedback, verified third-party data, and hands-on testing where we have it. Owner feedback means interviews and structured surveys with people who have lived with the product for six months or more, since they catch the failures that only show up after the honeymoon. Third-party data fills the gaps: EMF readings from independent labs, manufacturer warranty terms, real chiller specs, and verified buyer reviews aggregated across retailers. When we have hands-on time with a product, we say so on the review page.
We deliberately do not score on a 100-point rubric. Specs matter, but a sauna that hits every benchmark and lives unused in your garage scored zero. We rank for the use case: who this is genuinely best for, and who should keep shopping. If a $9,000 cabin is overkill for someone in a one-bedroom apartment, we say so and point them to a $499 blanket instead.
How we make money
We earn commissions from partner programs (ShareASale, Impact, and direct brand programs) when readers buy through our links. We do not let brands edit our copy, vet our picks, or see articles before they publish. If a product is wrong for you, we tell you, and we point you to the alternative, even when the alternative pays us nothing. Brands occasionally send us loaner units; we disclose that on the relevant review, and a loaner has never moved a product onto a "best of" list it didn't already deserve.
On health claims
Saunas and cold plunges are wellness tools, not medical treatments. We avoid medical promises and describe benefits the way the research and owners actually do: improved recovery, better sleep, a sharper mood, easier consistency with training. We do not claim infrared cures anything, that cold plunging detoxes anything, or that there is a magic temperature that unlocks longevity. If you have a heart condition, are pregnant, have low blood pressure, or take medications that affect thermoregulation, talk to your doctor before you buy. None of what we publish is medical advice.
Corrections and contact
If we got something wrong, a spec, a price, a model number, a claim a brand has since updated, email us and we will fix it and note the correction at the bottom of the page. We update our "best of" lists at least twice a year and any time a brand ships a materially different new model. The dates on each guide reflect the last full review, not a CMS-touched timestamp.

If you're new to the site, our most useful starting points are the buying guides for the decision framework, the brand directory if you already know what you want, and the two flagship category guides: best infrared saunas and best cold plunge tubs.
